  • Should I Play on a Travel Team?

Open teams are designed for the "top" athlete who wants to compete at a high level in the sport of volleyball. We will select teams for the 15U 16U 17U and 18U team levels and place 9-10 players on each roster. Open players are picked from tryouts by athletic ability, work ethic, skills, recruiting CD’s, in person scouting and position. We feel that it is a great privilege to be picked for a HardRock Open travel team, and therefore the requirements for participating are high. Athletes must be able to commit themselves to two days a week of training (Some combination of Sunday practices can substitute for a weekday conflict.) The HardRock Open Travel team trains from November thru the first week of May. This committment requires a love for the game and a strong desire to play college volleyball.  Players must have clear life goals and able to make many sacrifices in their every day life.

Traditionally our Travel program players play and practice a combined 55+ days.  Many of our players have traveled distances of up to 1.5 hours.  The Open teams practice 2X per week.   Open Travel Teams involve several 2 and 3 day tournaments as well. Each team will commit to attempting to qualify for USA Nationals which are being hosted in Reno, NV this year, and if the team is talented enough and decides too, they will attend 1 National Qualifier.   There are usually 3-2 day tournaments. There are 5 one day tournemants for Open Level teams.  The Open Teams will compete until the first week of May.   If a Open Team qualifies and accepts a National bid, the team will compete at the National tournament held in Reno Nevada from June 24 to July 3, 2010. The 18s schedule is slightly lowered to accommodate more of the senior year activities. The objective of the Open teams is to play at the highest level every time they compete. We anticipate the team goal is to qualify and attend USA Nationals. Any player wishing to be serious about the sport should consider this level.

  • Cost

At Hardrock, our mission is to keep the prices as low as possible for our travel teams. Our costs include but are not limited to: coaching salary and payroll taxes, facilities, equipment, tournaments, dues, nationals, Hardrock College Coaches Camp, and recruiting costs. This allows for parents to budget the total cost and pay in 3 installments. The total cost for the 2009-2010 season will be between $1100 - $1300. Final cost will be determined after teams are selected and tournaments are finalized with parent approval as flights, hotels, food, and other travel expenses are not included. Please remember that the total cost per player is based on a 10 player roster. If a team is short players for any reason, the players will split the additional cost equally.

Parents are responsible for their own player/family travel expenses to and from all events. Hardrock will have a parent travel coordinator to assist with all travel arrangements. At Hardrock, players are required to stay at the team hotel with their family or teammates family on a majority of the trips. We, along with our parent coordinator will do our best to get the most cost effective and convenient hotels.

  1. First Payment Due Prior to 1st Tryout: $500 refundable Team Deposit
  2. Second Payment Due January 6, 2010 : $500
  3. Final Payment Due by February 1, 2010 : $400 (max depending on tourney selection)

  • What if I Play Another Sport?
Players may participate in Winter and Spring Sports as long as they can attend their training and tournament schedule with minimal conflict. It is very popular for players to play basketball, be a cheerleader, swim, run track, or play softball on a travel team with very little conflict. If a player wants to participate in other school sponsored activities, they are required to review both their school schedule and club schedule with their coach and club director. All conflicts and decisions will be made on an individual basis.
  • Missed Time
Players on travel teams are not permitted to miss major tournament play dates. Only serious reasons for missed play-dates will be allowed and cleared through the director. Injured players are also required to attend each practice in full. We understand that serious situations and exclusive opportunities in life happen and are willing to work out individual situations and conflicts. Senior players are allowed to miss for prom day and graduation day.
Open/Travel team players are allowed to miss four practices during the 6-month training season without penalty and we discourage players to miss practice prior to a national qualifier. As a player gets older (U16-18), playing on a Open/Travel team should be primarily for players that want to play college volleyball. TRAINING and Recruiting is a main focus for these teams, and HardRock prides itself on the placement rate of players going on to play at the college level!
  • College Placement
Our 18 Open Team college placement rate is 90%! Over our 20 year history, these players have had very successful and enjoyable playing careers at Div I, II, and III levels. In fact, many of our graduates are even captains on their college teams. Our girls have talent, but they also have proven leadership on and off the court.
  • Tryouts
"True Success Comes To Those Who Dare To Try"
Each year NEW players are encouraged to try out for the HardRock Open/Travel teams. Again, these teams are open to any player that wishes to tryout. Many changes are made year-to-year when placing players on each team. Players should always feel welcome and confident to tryout for any level of HardRock. We ask that families be aware of all the requirements of an Open team before selecting to tryout for one.

We are looking forward to a terrific 15U,16U, 17U and 18U tryout.  The coaching staff in advance Thanks all those who are coming to try out for our Open Travel Teams. We will be posting the 2009-2010 Team Rosters on the Team Roster Announcements page on a date to be determined shortly. Please visit back often for updated information!

Remember.  If you were NOT selected for one of our limited Travel Team spots, do not be discouraged! Be sure to attend our Club Tryouts.  Check our Tryouts Page for the Specific time your Age Group is trying out.  All deposits will be applied to your Club level fees.
